The Vancouver Sun places my music video amongst the awesome Wilco & The Pack a.d.! 16 Feb 2012, 1:35 pm

From New music videos: The Pack a.d., The Autumn Portrait, Wilco
“Since its release on YouTube just 10 days ago, Vancouver indie-pop band The Autumn Portrait‘s Welcome To The Night has gathered close to 15,000 views.

Not bad at all for this little video (directed by Brianne Nord-Stewart) telling the love story between the Moon and the Sun performed at various locations in Vancouver, including the amazing Prophouse Cafe at Venables and Commercial Drive.

The Autumn Portrait plans to release three more videos and a radio single, all from the band’s debut The Design Is Over, over the next few weeks.” – Excerpt from The Vancouver Sun’s Blog AWESOME SOUND (click to read) by Francois Marchand

Brianne Nord-Stewart interviewed by the Jewish Independent Press 18 Dec 2010, 2:28 pm

“Trolls” director, Brianne Nord-Stewart has jumped from shorts, to a feature film, “Complexity”, a film by up and coming 18-year-old Adam Bogoch, where she is on board as Editor.

Cynthia Ramsay of the Jewish Independent Press interviewed Brianne and Adam for the December 17th issue.

A few bits from the interview:

“…For now…Complexity is mainly in Brianne’s capable hands. Her short film Trolls (trollsthemovie.com) has played at more than 35 film festivals worldwide and won numerous awards, including a Leo for best student production this year and best Canadian short at the World of Comedy Film Festival in Toronto. It also has been sold to broadcasters around the world. Brianne’s most recent film, The Provider, won best film at the 2010 Bloodshots 48-hour film competition and earned the grand-prize award of $1,000.

“Is Complexity similar to other films I have done? Not really,” she continued. “It is a whole other beast. It is my first feature film as an editor or in a lead creative role, so this is all new. But the film has comedic elements, and I am well versed in short comedies (mostly about awkward sex though and not romance), and Complexity is a story about people and their relationships, and I think a good narrative film always has those elements.”

Update on Bloodshots film “The Provider” 4 Dec 2010, 8:03 pm

So….After Andy Thompson and Brianne Nord-Stewart (Me, your trusty Trolls Director) won the 2010 Best Film award at the Vancouver Bloodshots 48 film competition in October, “The Provider”, along with all of the other shorts made, went on to be judged and voted on by anyone who watched the film online or in person and cast a vote via email.

We tried our darndest to get all the votes we could, and it was amazing to be able to show so many people around the world our film so quickly! Unfortunate for us, but fortunate for some other filmmakers, the audience choice award went to the film, “Altar of Blood”. Congrats!

And then…..A month later, after BOTH our film “The Provider” and the other “Altar of Blood” were sent off to Hollywood director Neil Marshall (“The Descent”) for further judging for the GRAND PRIZE, both sets of filmmakers ruinited at the Celluloaid social club to hear the verdict!

Drum roll please……………dadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadDA!

Brianne Nord-Stewart mentioned One to Watch in NSI article! 30 Nov 2010, 12:52 pm

So I didn’t know it was happening but I got word yesterday that Kellie Ann Benz, an National Screen Institute (NSI) columnist and creator of the Shorts Report, was writing a little article wrapping up the 2010 “Festada” season (Film Festivals Festivals + Canada = Festada) and mentioning her who’s who of filmmakers to watch out for in the upcoming months and years.

Kellie says,

“So, while the ink on Festada 2010 is just about to dry, I wanted to make sure that these filmmakers get on your radar. You’ll be hearing a lot of about all of them in the years to come. Erick Boychuk, Marshall Axani, Brianne Nord-Stewart, Jason Fischer, Alan Miller and Jerome Sable are the young bunch whose first one or two short films have showed an inspired vision…I predict we’ll all be enjoying these filmmakers’ first features soon.”

Well thank you so much Kellie!

And another awesome part of the article is that Kevan Funk (who was our trusty Key Grip on “Trolls”) is also mentioned further in the article.

Kevan’s most recent film, “A Fine Young Man“, was one of only 40 Canadian short films selected by the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival‘s Short Cuts Program, and went of to be played in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and next up Whistler’s International Film Festivals.

Kellie had this to say about Kevan,

“This next group of prolific filmmakers have made enough short films to fill a festival dedicated only to their work which, to be frank, would be wicked cool! Ann Marie Fleming, Andrew Williamson, Kryshan Randel, Jeff Chiba Stearns, Nadine Valcin (NSI Drama Prize student), Andrea Dorfman, Randall Okita and Kevan Funk. This group has now proven that investment in their futures has paid off. They make shorts that transport the viewer into a world that only these voices could speak.”

Congrats to all of these filmmakers as well! I am proud to know or have met most of you, or just to have seen your films!

Click the link to read Kellie’s entire article, “Kellie Ann Benz presents her list of filmmakers to watch“.

Brianne wins Director Award and Dawson takes home Best Actor at the 2010 VSFF 6 Nov 2010, 2:53 pm

Brianne at St. John's International Women's Film Festival, Oct 2010

Well the title says it all. The 5th annual Vancouver Short Film Festival took place from October 28-29th and “Trolls” had the priviledge of being programmed in the Pro Shorts Category.

While the director (me) was not in attendance, and neither were the actors (due to a minimum age restriction) “Trolls” took home the Women in Film and Television Award for Best Female Director in a Pro Short, and Dawson Dunbar received Best Male Actor in a Pro Short!

The competition was stiff. Jereme Watt’s “Everything’s Coming Up Rosie”, which was programmed with “Trolls” at VIFF 2009, swept the competition taking home 6 Awards.

St. John’s is the BEST write-up we’ve ever had. 6 Oct 2010, 6:46 pm

St. John’s NFLD here we come.

The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival is just around the corner, and the writer/director will be in attendance!

Venue: LSPU Hall
Date: Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Time: 7:00 pm

And the write up of “Trolls” for the festival…

“Man, this is funny. Already a top award winner on the festival circuit, TROLLS explores the emerging awareness of sexuality from the hilarious kids’ point of view. We all have our memories of trying to figure out how Flange A fits into Slot B, I am sure. Writer-director Brianne Nord-Stewart has the uncanny ability to capture the confusing exploration of that time, wonderfully embodied in the two munchkins who educate the adults about where babies come from. It’s actually amazing we ever figure it out at all.” – SJIWFF Program

If that doesn’t get people out for the film, then people in St. John’s must be boring. Or illiterate…That said from what I’ve heard about St. John’s, this is an amazing film festival that is not to be missed! I look forward to meeting you St. John’s!
