The comedic short, “Trolls”, is FINALLY available for streaming online! 11 Feb 2014, 6:51 pm

TROLLS at NSI ONLINE

Well it has been a long time waiting.  This short film “Trolls”, a comedy about two young kids trying to navigate and define was “doing it” really means, is available online at the National Screen Institute Online Film Festival. Released to film festival audiences around the world in 2009, then distributed for TV and VOD broadcast ever since, “Trolls” is a film that launched director Brianne Nord-Stewart into the world as a comedic writer/director/producer/editor. She is still doing all of those things, and is still making comedy. Follow her recent work at www.NORD-STEWART.com

The NSI Online Film Festival offers three awards to the film programmes quarterly: Best Film, Best Comedy, and the Fearless Female Director Award. “Trolls” is eligible to win all three. These are cash awards with the smallest being $500, and the largest at $2500.

Thanks to everyone who watched then, and to those who will share it now.

Head to the NSI site HERE, and watch the film for FREE! Leave a comment at the bottom of that page too!

A shout-out to Andy Thompson 11 Oct 2012, 3:02 pm

Andy Thompson, who co-produced and co-wrote The Provider, is now directing an interactive theatre adventure all over downtown Vancouver!

The 2-hour show starts in Yaletown but travels to different venues as the plot moves. The coolest thing about Andy’s show is that he puts you, as the audience, as the star of the show!

I am super proud of Andy Thompson for this upcoming play. In an interview with the Province, Andy said that he “got hooked” after his experience making The Provider, which won first prize in a North America-wide Bloodshots short contest.

With five daily shows from Oct 13 – 31, this is a show you definitely don’t want to miss out on!

Please help support Andy!

THE PROVIDER goes to Boston, Massachusetts on September 15th for Etheria 20 Jun 2012, 10:29 am

It’s been on my mind that while programming the Viscera Film Festival, I come across so many amazing short films directed by women that aren’t quite horror-y enough, or not horror at all, but that still have an amazing fantastical element to them. It makes me sad to have to forget about those films. So, in 2012, we decided not to.” – Heidi Honeycutt

It is a great honor that my short film THE PROVIDER is not only programmed on the Viscera Film Festival TOUR but to also be one of the first films to screen as part of the first ever Etheria Film Festival! Who knew a twisted post-apocalyptic alternate-history psychological thriller would do so well Not to mention it was made in 48 Hours!

The screening is not until September 15, 2012 so mark your calenders and let your Boston friends know!

Also check out www.etheriafilmfestival.com and the Facebook event page for the festival details and to share with your friends!

“Why I Bought a Bike” for your viewing pleasure on NSI Online and in Portland, OR! 16 Feb 2012, 12:23 pm

I am so happy to have my film programmed by the institution that is the Canadian National Screen Institute

“Why I Bought a Bike”, was my second short film which was produced while attending the renowned Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia . The VCA had a huge impact on my growth as a filmmaker and this film was a stepping stone on the way to “Why I Fired My Secretary”, which will be featured by NSI next week, and then “Trolls” which has been much talked about and widely screened around the world (we may have picked up a few awards and nominations along the way too!)

Thank you for your support everyone! CLICK TO WATCH THE ENTIRE FILM!

You can also catch “Why I Bought a Bike”, at the Clinton Street Theatre on Friday the 17th of February, in Portland, Oregon.  It will be part of the Mini Bike Winter festival and will be totally free! Please tell everyone who will be around to check it out. It will also be our final (planned) screening of ‘The Orgasm Trail’ program, which includes both 4:play and 5:speed.

Coming to a Computer Screen Near You! My films at the NSI Online Short Film Festival 12 Feb 2012, 5:31 pm

Often people ask me, “Where can I see your films?”.  I usually pause, half embarrassed and half frustrated, which leads to the following question “Are they online?” or “I’ll look you up on YouTube”. Which then leads to my explanation that unfortunately, due to the nature of film festival and broadcast regulations and agreements that I actually have to prevent the public from watching my films online whenever they want because then I would be making myself ineligible for Festivals, or in a lot of trouble from my distributors.

It’s counter intuitive to think that emerging filmmakers who just want anyone and everyone to watch their films, in hopes that they become a smash success and lead to a lifelong career of filmmaking, actually spend more time trying to prevent their precious password protected links from being published on the web for a global audience. This is to protect the exclusivity that an “Official Selection” by a festival holds. It can be frustrating as a filmmaker to go to all that work making the most amazing film only to try really hard to not let anyone see it.

That said, I am grateful to have had my films screened by many festivals around the world, but also thrilled that two of my films have been selected by the National Screen Institute of Canada for the Online Short Film Festival. By next week you can be watching the first installment of what I refer to as “The Sex Ones”, ie/ Why I Bought a Bike (2008) and the following week the second installment Why I Fired My Secretary (2008) on your very own computer screen – or someone else’s if you prefer. Don’t get too excited, you may be thinking “porn” when you read “sex” and “film” in the same sentence, but these two films are PG and more along the lines of hearing your parents talk about their sex lives – and I find it fascinating. Don’t get scared off. The programmers of the Edmonton International Film Festival, the Victoria Film Festival, the Dungog Film Festival, and more, all thought both films were worthy of their exclusive audiences.

Brianne Nord-Stewart interviewed by the Jewish Independent Press 18 Dec 2010, 2:28 pm

“Trolls” director, Brianne Nord-Stewart has jumped from shorts, to a feature film, “Complexity”, a film by up and coming 18-year-old Adam Bogoch, where she is on board as Editor.

Cynthia Ramsay of the Jewish Independent Press interviewed Brianne and Adam for the December 17th issue.

A few bits from the interview:

“…For now…Complexity is mainly in Brianne’s capable hands. Her short film Trolls (trollsthemovie.com) has played at more than 35 film festivals worldwide and won numerous awards, including a Leo for best student production this year and best Canadian short at the World of Comedy Film Festival in Toronto. It also has been sold to broadcasters around the world. Brianne’s most recent film, The Provider, won best film at the 2010 Bloodshots 48-hour film competition and earned the grand-prize award of $1,000.

“Is Complexity similar to other films I have done? Not really,” she continued. “It is a whole other beast. It is my first feature film as an editor or in a lead creative role, so this is all new. But the film has comedic elements, and I am well versed in short comedies (mostly about awkward sex though and not romance), and Complexity is a story about people and their relationships, and I think a good narrative film always has those elements.”

Update on Bloodshots film “The Provider” 4 Dec 2010, 8:03 pm

So….After Andy Thompson and Brianne Nord-Stewart (Me, your trusty Trolls Director) won the 2010 Best Film award at the Vancouver Bloodshots 48 film competition in October, “The Provider”, along with all of the other shorts made, went on to be judged and voted on by anyone who watched the film online or in person and cast a vote via email.

We tried our darndest to get all the votes we could, and it was amazing to be able to show so many people around the world our film so quickly! Unfortunate for us, but fortunate for some other filmmakers, the audience choice award went to the film, “Altar of Blood”. Congrats!

And then…..A month later, after BOTH our film “The Provider” and the other “Altar of Blood” were sent off to Hollywood director Neil Marshall (“The Descent”) for further judging for the GRAND PRIZE, both sets of filmmakers ruinited at the Celluloaid social club to hear the verdict!

Drum roll please……………dadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadadDA!

“The Provider” WINS the grand prize with a $1000 cash bonus!!!! Woot woot!

Brianne Nord-Stewart mentioned One to Watch in NSI article! 30 Nov 2010, 12:52 pm

So I didn’t know it was happening but I got word yesterday that Kellie Ann Benz, an National Screen Institute (NSI) columnist and creator of the Shorts Report, was writing a little article wrapping up the 2010 “Festada” season (Film Festivals Festivals + Canada = Festada) and mentioning her who’s who of filmmakers to watch out for in the upcoming months and years.

Kellie says,

“So, while the ink on Festada 2010 is just about to dry, I wanted to make sure that these filmmakers get on your radar. You’ll be hearing a lot of about all of them in the years to come. Erick Boychuk, Marshall Axani, Brianne Nord-Stewart, Jason Fischer, Alan Miller and Jerome Sable are the young bunch whose first one or two short films have showed an inspired vision…I predict we’ll all be enjoying these filmmakers’ first features soon.”

Well thank you so much Kellie!

And another awesome part of the article is that Kevan Funk (who was our trusty Key Grip on “Trolls”) is also mentioned further in the article.

Kevan’s most recent film, “A Fine Young Man“, was one of only 40 Canadian short films selected by the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival‘s Short Cuts Program, and went of to be played in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and next up Whistler’s International Film Festivals.

Kellie had this to say about Kevan,

“This next group of prolific filmmakers have made enough short films to fill a festival dedicated only to their work which, to be frank, would be wicked cool! Ann Marie Fleming, Andrew Williamson, Kryshan Randel, Jeff Chiba Stearns, Nadine Valcin (NSI Drama Prize student), Andrea Dorfman, Randall Okita and Kevan Funk. This group has now proven that investment in their futures has paid off. They make shorts that transport the viewer into a world that only these voices could speak.”

Congrats to all of these filmmakers as well! I am proud to know or have met most of you, or just to have seen your films!

Click the link to read Kellie’s entire article, “Kellie Ann Benz presents her list of filmmakers to watch“.

Brianne wins Director Award and Dawson takes home Best Actor at the 2010 VSFF 6 Nov 2010, 2:53 pm

Brianne at St. John's International Women's Film Festival, Oct 2010

Well the title says it all. The 5th annual Vancouver Short Film Festival took place from October 28-29th and “Trolls” had the priviledge of being programmed in the Pro Shorts Category.

While the director (me) was not in attendance, and neither were the actors (due to a minimum age restriction) “Trolls” took home the Women in Film and Television Award for Best Female Director in a Pro Short, and Dawson Dunbar received Best Male Actor in a Pro Short!

The competition was stiff. Jereme Watt’s “Everything’s Coming Up Rosie”, which was programmed with “Trolls” at VIFF 2009, swept the competition taking home 6 Awards.

For more details you can read the Short Report, covered by Kellie Ann Benz, or check out the Vancouver Short Film Festival Website at www.vsff.com.

St. John’s is the BEST write-up we’ve ever had. 6 Oct 2010, 6:46 pm

St. John’s NFLD here we come.

The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival is just around the corner, and the writer/director will be in attendance!

Venue: LSPU Hall
Date: Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Time: 7:00 pm

And the write up of “Trolls” for the festival…

“Man, this is funny. Already a top award winner on the festival circuit, TROLLS explores the emerging awareness of sexuality from the hilarious kids’ point of view. We all have our memories of trying to figure out how Flange A fits into Slot B, I am sure. Writer-director Brianne Nord-Stewart has the uncanny ability to capture the confusing exploration of that time, wonderfully embodied in the two munchkins who educate the adults about where babies come from. It’s actually amazing we ever figure it out at all.” – SJIWFF Program

If that doesn’t get people out for the film, then people in St. John’s must be boring. Or illiterate…That said from what I’ve heard about St. John’s, this is an amazing film festival that is not to be missed! I look forward to meeting you St. John’s!
